Your Delphi Day Tour will introduce you to mystical Delphi, the place where, in ancient times, it was believed that heaven and earth met, and was thus the centre of the known world. In Mythology, the God Zeus released two eagles in opposite directions, believing that the place they met, Delphi, indicating the centre of the earth. Delphi is the place of worship of Zeus’ son, the God Apollo. Delphi was also the place where, every four years, (commencing in 776 BC) athletes came from all over the Greek world to compete in the Pythian Games, one of the four panhellenic games, and a precursor to the Modern Olympics.
You will picked up from your hotel at approximately 8.45am. Your Delphi Day Tour begins with a drive through the fertile plain of Beotia, passing through through the towns of Thebes connected with the tragedy of King Oedipus -Levadia and Arachova.
On arrival at Delphi, you will see the “Omphalos” (Navel of Earth) – whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic World. In Mythology, the Omphalos was a stone thrown by Zeus into the sky, with the place it landed indicating the centre of the earth.
On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, in a landscape of unparalleled beauty and majesty, lie the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo, the most famous oracle of the ancient world.
You will also visit the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo and the Museum containing masterpieces of the ancient Greek sculpture such as the bronze Charioteer, the famous athlete Aghias and the Sphinx.
Lunch in the modern village of Delphi, and return back to Athens by the same route. You will be dropped back at your hotel at approximately 19.00.
